A Beginner's Guide to Choosing the Right English Proficiency Test

IELTS, TOEFL, PTE — how these tests differ, and which factors actually matter when picking one.

Most English proficiency tests measure the same four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — but differ in format, delivery, and which institutions or countries accept them. The right choice usually comes down to one question first: what does the specific university, employer, or visa authority you're applying to actually require?

Some institutions accept any major test; others specify one by name, or a specific version of it (for example, IELTS for UKVI for certain UK visa categories). Always check the exact requirement before choosing a test, rather than assuming they're interchangeable.

If you do have a genuine choice, consider format: some tests are entirely computer-delivered with fully automated scoring, which suits candidates comfortable typing and want faster results. Others include a face-to-face Speaking component with a human examiner, which some candidates find easier to perform naturally in.

Finally, consider test availability in your area and how far in advance you need results — computer-delivered formats generally offer more frequent test dates and faster turnaround than paper-based ones.
