The Complete dMAT Study Guide

Everything you need to know about the exam format, how it's scored, and how to use this portal to prepare for it.

What is dMAT?

The dMAT (digital Master Test) is a new standardized academic-aptitude test introduced in 2026 as an additional part of the APS documentation process for select Indian applicants applying to Master's programs in Germany. It's administered by g.a.s.t., while APS India continues to handle academic document verification separately — dMAT doesn't replace APS, it becomes part of your APS documentation. It measures cognitive and analytical problem-solving ability, not memorized knowledge, and is not an English proficiency test.

Test Format

Scores run from 0 to 200, with 100 as the average, and the certificate has no expiry date. No calculator or notes are permitted anywhere in the exam. dMAT is still new, so confirm the current structure with g.a.s.t. or APS India before your test date.

Core Module — 70 mins

3 subtests, back-to-back

Figure Sequences (20 tasks / 25 min), Mathematical Equations (20 / 25) and Latin Squares (16 / 20). These measure general cognitive ability rather than anything you studied — roughly 75 seconds per question, so pace matters as much as accuracy.

Subject Module — 90 mins

General Academic Module

Text-based, single-choice problems testing whether you can apply what you learned during your Bachelor's — not recall it. On the APS India route this is the module you sit, rather than a subject-specific one such as Chemistry or Data Science.

Who dMAT Currently Applies To

Engineering graduates

Indian applicants with an undergraduate Engineering degree, applying for Master's study in Germany.

Commerce & Finance graduates

Applicants with degrees in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or Economics.

Business & Management graduates

Applicants with degrees in Business or Management, applying from Summer Semester 2027 onward, subject to transition rules.

How dMAT Is Scored

Because dMAT only launched in 2026, a detailed public scoring scale hasn't been widely published yet. Your result is issued by g.a.s.t. and becomes part of your official APS certificate. Check the latest guidance from g.a.s.t. and APS India directly for the current scoring rubric before you rely on any third-party estimate.

  • New for 2026 — an additional part of APS documentation for select Indian Master's applicants to Germany
  • Administered by g.a.s.t.; APS India still separately verifies your academic documents
  • Not an English proficiency test — it measures cognitive, analytical, and academic problem-solving ability
  • Two modules: a Core Module (general cognitive skills) and a General Academic Module (applied problem-solving)
  • Currently applies to Indian graduates in Engineering, Commerce/Finance/Economics, and Business/Management
  • Transition-period exemptions exist for applicants who registered or shipped APS documents before the cutoff — check current eligibility with APS India

Everything About the dMAT Exam

The administrative details most candidates want to know before booking a test.

Why take dMAT?

If your APS India pathway to a German Master's requires it, dMAT becomes a mandatory part of your APS documentation — without it, your APS certificate process may be incomplete.

Who needs dMAT?

Indian applicants with undergraduate degrees in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, applying for a Master's program in Germany, subject to the current transition-period rules — always verify your own eligibility with APS India first.

Is dMAT the same as APS?

No. APS verifies your academic documents; dMAT assesses academic aptitude. dMAT results become part of your APS certificate rather than replacing the APS process.

Is dMAT the same as TestAS?

No — they're separate tests from separate organizations. dMAT is specific to the India-to-Germany APS Master's pathway; TestAS is a broader German-university aptitude test used more widely.

Where do I check current eligibility and format?

Always check the official g.a.s.t. and APS India websites directly, since dMAT is new for 2026 and both the format and the transition-period exemption rules may be updated as the rollout continues.

Study materials

This portal's Study Material section covers Core Module reasoning strategy and academic problem-solving practice, based on the officially published dMAT structure. See "How mocktests. Helps You Prepare" below.

A Clear Prep Roadmap

This guide breaks dMAT down the way we recommend approaching any new academic-aptitude test — diagnostic, foundational reasoning skills, applied problem-solving practice, and timed simulation.

Growing Practice Library

As official dMAT material becomes available, sectional and full-length practice content will be added to this portal. Check the course page for what's live right now.

Performance Tracking

Once you start completing practice sets on this portal, your Performance Overview will track Core Module and General Academic Module accuracy separately.

Test Day Tips

  • Confirm your current APS eligibility and dMAT requirement directly with APS India before registering.
  • Because dMAT emphasizes transfer and application over memorization, practice reasoning through unfamiliar problems rather than memorizing formulas.
  • Keep a copy of your dMAT result together with the rest of your APS documentation.
  • Since dMAT is newly introduced, double-check current test-day logistics (ID, location, format) on the official g.a.s.t. site close to your test date.
  • Build general quantitative and analytical reasoning fluency — the test is designed to measure how well you transfer skills, not what you've memorized.
