The Complete PTE Academic Study Guide

Everything you need to know about the exam format, how it's scored, and how to use this portal to prepare for it.

What is PTE Academic?

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic is a fully computer-delivered English proficiency test, used mainly for university admissions and student or skilled-migration visas. Unlike IELTS, every skill — including Speaking — is recorded and scored automatically by Pearson's AI scoring engine, with no human interviewer, which is why results are typically available within 1-2 business days.

Test Format

All sections are taken in one sitting on a computer, totalling around 2 hours.

PTE Academic Test Types

PTE Academic (Test Centre)

The standard version, delivered at an official Pearson test centre. This portal is built around this version.

PTE Academic Online

The identical test, taken at home with online proctoring — same format, questions, and scoring as the test-centre version.

How PTE Academic Is Scored

PTE reports an Overall Score plus four communicative skill scores — Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening — all on a 10–90 scale, along with detailed enabling-skills sub-scores (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and more). Because many tasks feed more than one skill score — Repeat Sentence counts toward both Speaking and Listening, for example — a single strong or weak task type can move several scores at once, which is why targeting high-impact question types pays off.

Everything About the PTE Academic Exam

The administrative details most candidates want to know before booking a test.

Why take PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is used to prove English proficiency for university admission and for skilled-migration and student visa applications, particularly to Australia, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand. Its fast turnaround (1-2 days) makes it popular for applicants working against tight deadlines.

Who needs PTE Academic?

Students applying to universities that accept PTE, skilled migrants and visa applicants for Australia, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand, and anyone who needs results quickly enough to meet an application or visa deadline.

Countries and institutions accepting PTE

PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of universities and colleges worldwide, and is recognised for visa purposes by the immigration authorities of the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries.

Test and score validity

A PTE Academic score is valid for 2 years from your test date, after which most institutions and visa authorities will require a new test.

Test frequency and registration

PTE Academic is offered at test centres (and online) on a rolling basis year-round, often with dates available within a few days. You register online through the official Pearson PTE website, using the same passport or national ID you'll bring on test day.

Test fees

Fees vary by country and currency, generally in a similar range to other major English tests. Always check the exact, current fee for your country on the official Pearson PTE registration page.

How results are delivered

Results are typically available online within 1-2 business days — much faster than paper-based exams — and can be sent directly to institutions or immigration authorities you're applying to.

Test Day Tips

  • There's no interviewer — speak clearly into the microphone during the on-screen sound check before the test starts.
  • Speaking tasks are recorded and scored automatically, so avoid long pauses or restarting mid-sentence.
  • Time is section-locked — once Reading time runs out you move on automatically and can't return to it.
  • Bring the same ID you registered with; mismatches can mean you're turned away.
  • Results are usually ready within 1-2 business days, so you can plan application deadlines around it.
