The Complete IMAT Study Guide

Everything you need to know about the exam format, how it's scored, and how to use this portal to prepare for it.

What is IMAT?

The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is used for admission to English-taught Medicine and Surgery, and related English-taught single-cycle programs, in Italy. It's published and administered under rules set by Italy's Ministry of University and Research (MUR). IMAT is conducted in English, but it is not an English-language proficiency exam — it tests whether you have the science foundation and reasoning ability required for medical study, combining Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and logical reasoning.

Test Format

60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes, five answer options per question. MUR can change the exact structure by admission cycle, so always confirm the current format on the official MUR IMAT page before your test date.

Biology

23 of 60 questions

The largest section by far — cell biology, biomolecules, enzymes, genetics, molecular biology, cell division, human physiology, evolution, and ecology.

Chemistry

15 of 60 questions

The second-largest scientific section — atomic structure, periodic table, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, acids & bases, and organic chemistry fundamentals.

Physics & Mathematics

13 of 60 questions

Mechanics, energy, electricity, and waves for Physics; algebra, probability, and statistics for Mathematics — a smaller but still important combined section.

Logic, Reading & General Knowledge

9 of 60 questions

A smaller portion of the exam covering logical deduction and problem-solving, plus reading comprehension and broad general knowledge — don't over-invest here relative to the science sections.

IMAT vs Related Italian Admission Tests

CEnT-S

Used for English-taught science and engineering programs in Italy — not medicine-specific, and without a medical orientation.

IMAT

Specifically for Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine admission — the focus of this guide.

How IMAT Is Scored

Each correct answer earns +1.5, an unanswered question scores 0, and each incorrect answer costs −0.4, giving a maximum possible score of 90 (60 questions × 1.5). Because of the negative marking, blind guessing on questions you have no basis for is usually not worth the risk — but if you can eliminate two or more of the five options, attempting the question often becomes worthwhile.

Key Facts

  • 60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes, with 5 answer options per question
  • Delivered in English but tests Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and reasoning — not English proficiency
  • Biology is by far the largest section, followed by Chemistry, then Physics & Mathematics combined
  • Scoring is +1.5 / 0 / −0.4, giving a maximum possible score of 90
  • Used specifically for admission to English-taught Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine programs in Italy
  • MUR can revise the exact section structure by admission cycle — always confirm the current format before your test date

Everything About the IMAT Exam

The administrative details most candidates want to know before booking a test.

Why take IMAT?

IMAT is required for admission to English-taught Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine programs at Italian universities, and determines your position on the admission ranking for those programs.

Who needs IMAT?

International and Italian students applying to English-taught medical, dental, or veterinary programs in Italy — including a growing number of applicants from India and other countries seeking an affordable path into an English-taught medical degree.

How is IMAT different from NEET?

Both test Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, but IMAT also includes Mathematics and a dedicated Logical Reasoning section, which NEET doesn't have. Strong NEET preparation gives you a solid science foundation, but doesn't automatically prepare you for IMAT's reasoning, reading, and IMAT-specific question style.

Test frequency and registration

IMAT is held once per admission cycle on a date set by MUR each year, with registration through the official MUR/Universitaly portal. Always check the current year's official notice for exact dates and deadlines.

How is admission decided?

Your IMAT score determines your position on a ranking list for your chosen university and available seats — it's competitive, not pass/fail, so your score relative to other applicants matters as much as the absolute number.

Study materials

This portal's Study Material section covers Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Logical Reasoning fundamentals, weighted toward the sections that carry the most questions. See "How mocktests. Helps You Prepare" below.

A Clear Prep Roadmap

This guide breaks IMAT down into the same stages we recommend — diagnostic, foundational science review, concept mastery, timed practice, and full simulation — weighted toward Biology and Chemistry, where most questions live.

Growing Practice Library

Sectional and full-length IMAT practice content is being added to this portal. Check the course page for what's live right now, with more subject-specific drills arriving regularly.

Performance Tracking

Once you start completing practice sets on this portal, your Performance Overview will track Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics, and Logic/Reading separately, so you know exactly where to focus.

Test Day Tips

  • Because Biology carries roughly a third of all questions, make sure it's your strongest section going in.
  • With −0.4 for wrong answers, only guess when you can eliminate at least one or two of the five options.
  • Budget your 100 minutes unevenly — harder Physics or Chemistry calculation questions deserve more time than quick Biology recall questions.
  • Bring the same ID document you registered with; mismatches can mean you're turned away.
  • Always check the official MUR IMAT page close to your test date, since the exact section structure can change by admission cycle.
